Good morning.

The outrage over children at McReynolds Middle School having to crawl under and climb over trains to get to school has grown after we published our editorial on the problem. So we're following up with a live virtual event at 11 a.m. CST on Tuesday, June 18, with Houston City Councilmember Mario Castillo, Harris County Commissioner Adrian Garcia, Principal Chastity Caesar and a representative from Union Pacific. They will be joined by Opinion Editor Lisa Falkenberg. To join our private Zoom event, please register here.

Mike Miles has been in Houston a full year now. We met with the appointed Houston ISD superintendent last week. He celebrated the higher STAAR test scores that the school district received, and especially pointed to the growth at NES schools where he focused his reforms. We published an edited video of the interview along with our evaluation of the numbers and his first year in office. There are certainly reasons to cheer but it's too early to declare victory and the upheaval he's brought could ultimately undermine any progress made.

Confused by the back and forth between Houston Mayor John Whitmire and Controller Chris Hollins over the firefighter pay deal? Our editorial today calls balls and strikes, and gives you the decades-long context you need to make sense of it all. Bottom-line is that Hollins shouldn't rubber stamp the deal. Someone needs to read the fine print.

As always, let us know what you think. Send us a letter to viewpoints@houstonchronicle.com and we hope you'll join us tomorrow at 11 a.m. for the virtual event.

The results look good but how good is the question.

Hollins should question Whitmire's agreement with the firefighters.

Given Houston's looming financial deficit, Chris Hollins is right to ask questions about the city's $650 million agreement with the firefighters' union.

Identify the problem, solve it until it's fixed good enough or the kids stop complaining, then take a nap. That's the boring dad strategy!

Texas leaders say offshore wind is an environmental threat. It's not.

Offshore wind platforms help fish. There's no evidence they endanger whales and they pose a fraction of the threat to birds as cats do. Plus it will make the Texas grid cleaner and more reliable.

The real secret of great photos

There's "the bird and the worm." There's the rule of thirds. But most important of all, there's being in the right place at the right time and paying attention.

Dems saved Phelan in GOP runoff? That's Texas Democracy.

If Texas Republicans have their way, the state's open primary system would be eliminated to ensure that Democrats have even less of a voice in the electoral process.

Abbott promises school vouchers. But what about accountability?

Kelly Frels, Houston: "Assuming legislators are going to vote for a voucher bill, and without conceding its lawfulness, at a minimum they must require that the schools that benefit from our state's public funds be held accountable to maintaining specific and measurable standards."
