Welcome back to Houston Chronicle Live, a weekly newsletter that keeps you updated on all the live events we're hosting this week and beyond.
Two weeks ago, the Editorial Board published a searing Opinion video under the headline, "HISD students are crawling under stalled trains to get to school. Where's the outrage?" Well, the outrage soon followed, as it was viewed over 200,000 times across social platforms, with many comments demanding accountability and change. As a result, we're hosting a community virtual event tomorrow with lawmakers, community leaders and a representative from Union Pacific. More on that below.
Have you registered yet for our summer book club? Sign up to read a thrilling novel (I start started, and I'm getting Lonesome Dove vibes) and meet the award-winning author at our live event.
See you tomorrow on Zoom.

For generations, children at McReynolds Middle School have experienced firsthand the realities of going to school near one of the busiest railyards in the country. Students there are forced to crawl over or under stalled trains or even take their chances with slow-moving ones just to get to school. A recent Houston Chronicle Editorial Board video highlighted the issue, which struck a chord with thousands of viewers.
We're hosting a community virtual event on what can be done, with Houston City Councilmember Mario Castillo, Harris County Commissioner Adrian Garcia, Principal Chastity Caesar and Union Pacific executive Clint Schelbitzki. It will be moderated by the Chronicle's Editor of Opinion, Lisa Falkenberg.

Has anyone ever gotten hurt from the trains? What kind of cargo are they carrying? Why has this been going on for so long? If you have any questions for tomorrow's panel, please send them to live@houstonchronicle.com.

Last week, we hosted a virtual event on the Houston Rockets' first championship, which took place 30 years ago this month. In addition to former star players Mario Elie and Matt Bullard, the legendary Coach Rudy Tomjanovich made a surprise appearance, fresh off winning the Chuck Daly Lifetime Achievement Award.
It was truly a nostalgic treat for the Houston fan, as we relived Choke City to Clutch City, and everything in between. If you missed out, catch up with a recording on our YouTube channel.
