Katy city council has reappointed mayor pro tem Chris Harris for a third term

I've been covering Katy for about 6 years now, and city council member Chris Harris has been mayor pro tem for almost that entire time.

Harris has been confirmed for a third term as mayor pro tem for the city of Katy. He's served on city council since 2018 and has served as mayor pro tem since 2019.

I have to be honest here: I didn't know what a mayor pro tem was before I started reporting. To be fair, I didn't know much about government in general; I once had to Google the difference between a constable and a sheriff.

I would later learn that a mayor pro tem can do pretty much everything a mayor can do if the mayor isn't available. As Harris has served under two different mayors now, he's spent quite a bit of time doing mayor-like things in Katy.

"I almost consider him co-mayor," said Katy Mayor Dusty Thiele. "There's no place that I ever go that Chris isn't there, and he represents the city very well."

Congratulations to Harris for the appointment to his third term as mayor pro tem of the city we all love so much.

One last thing ...

As a science-fiction fan, I can't help but think this story by my colleague Peter Warren sounds like the start of a Ridley Scott film.

An astronaut will swab the exterior of the International Space Station during a spacewalk in hopes of learning more about microorganisms living in space, Peter writes.

It's not known at this point if the samples will be brought back to Earth, but I personally would prefer it if they not.
