Houston could see more stormy weather, power outages soon

We've been focused on storm updates and power outage trackers all month here at the Chronicle, and more storms are expected through the weekend.

My Cinco Ranch neighborhood had its turn with a power outage after Tuesday's storm blew through.

I couldn't open the garage door with no electricity, and charging my devices in the car wasn't an option due to the risk of carbon monoxide build-up.

After a few hours of waiting, I finally called an Uber and set out to find electricity.

Back when I lived in Pennsylvania, during blizzards, the local Starbucks would often be the sole beacon of light in a darkened retail center. It was always packed in winters. Tuesday I worked at the La Centerra Starbucks and felt oddly nostalgic, like I'd time-traveled back to the hipster era of 2010.

The next round of storms is expected in the overnight hours, and their strength or weakness could determine what happens in the next few days.

Shout Out

A shout out to this kind purveyor of sweet pastries. In honor of National Donut Day, Shipley Do-Nuts plans to give away free donuts with any purchase on June 7. The donut and coffee chain will serve up its "famous glazed do-nuts" at each location while supplies last.

One last thing ...

Power outages can have silver linings, I guess? After severe storms swept through the Houston metro area on Tuesday, rare and eye-catching mammatus clouds — a distinctive, pouch-like cloud formation — filled the skies over Southeast Texas.
