For an animal that can’t seem to master the art of avoiding a Mack truck, the armadillo has become one of the most recognizable Texas brands, up there with Willie Nelson, the longhorn and the prickly pear cactus.
However, the symbolism of the armadillo has been as expansive and messy — and controversial — as the Lone Star State the animal resides in.
