Historic League City home gets new life as a visitor's center, cafe.

There's something about old homes. You can often find centuries-old oak trees in front and lining the street, and every old home seems to have a front porch.

This is what parts of League City's historic district look like. I'm not a League City native, and when I first visited the historic district, I was struck by how many of these homes remain in pristine condition.

That doesn't happen overnight — the city and various community groups have worked to preserve its heritage, and now one of League City's most iconic buildings has been repurposed as a new visitor center.

The League City Visitor Center opened in November in a house that once belonged to the first Railroad Station Master of the Galveston/Houston and Henderson Railroad Company.

Manager Stephanie Polk said it's a way to draw in new visitors, shoppers and residents amid continuing growth while providing a glimpse into the city's past.

It's jarring when a historic place gets demolished or is turned into something like an office building – like my childhood movie theater in Pasadena being turned into a daycare center.

These places seem to lose some of the character you attach to it.

Read more here about how Polk found a way to restore a piece of League City's legacy while still building on its future.

Shout out to Clear Lake's Jerrick Guidry, one of the Houston Chronicle's top performers in Houston area boys high school basketball.
