It's the first day of school in Pearland, and the first day of school lunch. Cafeteria foods sure have upgraded since I was in high school with buffet-style services and limited vegan and vegetarian options.
Growing up in South Texas, I was a vegetarian up until middle school. During that time, my mom would pack me different Gujarati food for lunch. And like most Indians who had similar experiences, I received comments like "Ew, it smells weird" or "That looks gross. What is that?"
I stopped taking lunch to school to avoid the comments, and the nice cafeteria chefs would make me a grilled cheese after everyone else picked up their food from the lunch line.
Since then, I feel like school cafeterias have been accommodating to dietary restrictions and inclusive. Pearland ISD is no exception with Asian and Mexican cuisine lunches.
But I'd like to know your experience.
The Houston Chronicle is searching for the campus that serves the best meal in our local school lunch reviews poll. Let us know your child's favorite school-provided meal and why they love it.
