Triple-degree heat continues as Conroe ISD enforces back-to-school heat protocol.

According to our new weather team, the worst of the summer heat is over, but it sure doesn't feel like it. That unseasonable heat is pairing with the start of the football season and school recesses, and Houston-area schools are implementing heat protocols to keep kids safe in the heat.

Most schools have their own heat protocols but also follow the University Scholastic League's guidelines. For Conroe ISD, outdoor activities are restricted when the heat index reaches between 100 to 105. Football causes the most heat-related injuries due to protective gear, according to the UIL, and the district does not allow football players to wear helmets or shoulder pads during conditioning.

So far, there has been one heat-related incident at CISD, the district's director of communications Sarah Blakelock said.  Blakelock said the campus followed protocol correctly and the student is doing well. Check out Catherine Dominguez's story on heat protocols here.

It seems to good to be true, but hope may be on the horizon—my Apple Weather app is showing a brisk high of just 92 in The Woodlands next Tuesday. Check out the Houston Chronicle's new Weather Wonks team of meteorologists for more reliable information—from heat stress tips to figuring out which city is hottest in Texas, they've been tackling the heat wave all summer long.
