Fort Bend ISD considers granting superintendent power to ban books

Book banning in local schools, especially concerning children and topics like sex, has been making headlines over the past two years.

The banning of Are You There God? It's Me, Margaret by Katy ISD was highlighted in the Judy Blume documentary released last year on Amazon.

The Fort Bend ISD school board first visited the issue in April, and met again last week. Trustees have spent hours debating whether the superintendent should have sole authority over which library books and textbooks should be on the shelves of Fort Bend ISD schools.

Superintendent Marc Smith said he would probably leave book ban and removal decisions to a committee of certified educators.

How do you think school officials should handle book removals in Fort Bend ISD libraries?

Write and let us know.

A new tech-heavy pickleball facility opening soon in Katy will bring an AI-driven approach to the wildly popular sport, writes my colleague Claire Goodman. Each court is equipped with cameras that record gameplay in real time, Moin said. Once the game is over, computers generate an AI re-creation of the game, and players can review their moves.
