Today's starting lineup

After three straight tight losses in Seattle, the Astros needed a stopper to emerge Thursday. Enter Spencer Arrighetti. The rookie had his best start, tossing six shutout innings to pace a Houston victory that averted a series sweep. Up next: a six-game homestand starting tonight with a visit from Carlos Correa and the Twins.

Stefon Diggs took the field with the Texans for the first time at Thursday's organized team activity. Jonathan M. Alexander looks at how Diggs fits in a deep receiver corps and sizes up other developments from OTAs. Houston has its entire draft class signed after reaching a deal with second-round pick Blake Fisher.

Breakfast at the Cotton Bowl for Texas vs. Oklahoma? Not this year. The Red River Rivalry, now an SEC game, will kick off in an afternoon window instead. Meantime, UH has a host of night games on next season's schedule. Check out the dates, times and TV networks released for all 13 Texas FBS programs.

Texas A&M and Texas are on a collision course at the College Station baseball regional beginning today. At the Women's College World Series, top-seeded Texas blanks Stanford in Oklahoma City.

A Texas team is in the NBA Finals for the first time in 10 years after the Mavericks finished off the Timberwolves in Game 5 of the Western Conference finals.

Stat of the day: 9. NBA Finals appearances for the Spurs (six) and Mavericks (three) since the Rockets won their most recent championship in 1995. Neither San Antonio nor Dallas had ever made the championship series at that point.

Youth is served

With the Astros' rotation thinned by injuries, the emergence of Hunter Brown and Spencer Arrighetti, who had strong starts this week in Seattle, has been a welcomed development.

  • Sweep averted: Spencer Arrighetti shines on the mound and Alex Bregman fuels the offense as the Astros avoid a four-game sweep against AL West leader Seattle.
  • Astros vs. Twins preview: The Twins visit for a three-game series beginning tonight, with former Astros shortstop Carlos Correa turning in a full May for Minnesota after missing a couple weeks in April with an oblique strain.
  • Remember the Eagles: Houston is the only Texas city to have a baseball team in the Negro Leagues. A look back at the Eagles, who moved to town in 1949 from Newark.
