Lamar alum Jaivion Green will play for a national championship tonight at NRG Stadium

Jaivion Green grew up just a short drive from NRG Stadium.

Later tonight, the former Lamar High School standout will play in the biggest football game of his life at the same venue as his Washington Huskies battle Michigan for the CFP national championship.

Green, who graduated from Lamar in 2022, has played in 23 games for the Huskies in two seasons since arriving on campus. The 6-foot-2 cornerback says playing at home in Houston is a special experience.

Lamar head coach Michael Lindsey and plenty of other supporters will be on hand tonight as Green culminates a storybook season that brought him back to his H-Town roots.

More football headlines

Lone Star connections: While Green is the only player from either Washington or Michigan who is from Houston, there are 11 others who call Texas home. Eight of those players are from the Dallas area, but the others are spread out from Waco to Lufkin to Austin. Check out our breakdown here.

Tops in the country: The past month has been a whirlwind for Willis quarterback D.J. Lagway. The five-star Florida recruit signed his national letter of intent just before Christmas and recently competed in the Under Armour All-America Game in Orlando. Last Thursday, Lagway received a surprised from Emmitt Smith, the NFL's all-time leading rusher and a former Florida star. Smith presented Lagway with a trophy as he was named the Gatorade Football National Player of the Year.

Backing the Buckeyes: Speaking of big-time recruits, North Shore junior cornerback Devin Sanchez is certainly that. Following another standout season, he's got 33 college offers and is the No. 4 overall recruit in the country for the 2025 class. Sanchez made headlines over the weekend, announcing his commitment to Ohio State. The No. 1 player in Texas chose the Buckeyes over Texas A&M and Alabama.
