END OF YEAR SALE: ONLY 25¢! |
Today's starting lineup
The North Shore Mustangs say they play for the name on the front of their jerseys, as well as the one on the back of them: Eastside.
Before North Shore became the best football program in Houston, Jerome Solomon writes, that side of town didn't have many bragging rights on the local high school sports scene.
Now, North Shore is the standard. Saturday's loss in the Class 6A Division I title game to Duncanville doesn't change that.
Summer Creek lost its title game as well, falling to DeSoto, but the school's first trip to a state title game will leave lasting memories.
Port Neches-Groves has plenty of moments to cherish after beating Dallas South Oak Cliff in Class 5A thanks to a big gamble from its head coach.
Switching to the NFL, the Texans are making a gamble of their own perhaps against Tennessee. Houston will likely go with Case Keenum at quarterback to replace C.J. Stroud, who is in concussion protocol. Keenum, 35, hasn't been active all season and has been the No. 3 quarterback behind Stroud and Davis Mills.
It was an exciting day of college basketball at Toyota Center. No. 4 UH held on to beat Texas A&M and No. 19 Texas beat LSU. The Aggies and Wade Taylor IV showed they can play with anyone, despite the loss. And Texas got better with the return of Dylan Disu. However, the Cougars lost guard Terrance Arceneaux for the season with an Achilles injury.
Toyota Center's regular team, the Rockets, are on the road against Milwaukee as they go for their fifth straight win.
Stat of the day: 27. Points in a row for Texas Tech to beat Cal in the Independence Bowl.

Solomon: North Shore is still Houston's standard, despite loss
North Shore is the standard for Houston-area high school football. Saturday's loss doesn't change that.
- Full circle: Two years after leading North Shore to a state title over Duncanville as a freshman, Kaleb Bailey felt blessed to be able to play Saturday.
- 'Dream come true': Summer Creek will suffer the sting of defeat for now, as one might expect. But the experience will be a memory that lasts forever.
- A daring move: Port Neches-Groves converted and onside kick and avenged its 2022 state final loss to South Oak Cliff to capture its first state title since 1975.

No. 4 UH holds off Texas A&M rally for win
Emanuel Sharp finished with 21 points and L.J. Cryer added 17 points for the fourth-ranked Cougars.
- Big loss: Houston guard Terrance Arceneaux is out for the season after injuring his Achilles.
- Aggies' bright spot: Star guard Wade Taylor IV did all he could to pull the Aggies through Saturday against No. 4 UH.
- Texas 96, LSU 85: Guard Max Abmas led the Longhorns with 20 points in matchup of future SEC foes.
- He's back: A key contributor to the Longhorns' Elite Eight run last year, Dylan Disu made his season debut Saturday after missing the first nine games due to a foot injury.
