Hanukkah, which kicked off last week, symbolizes hope during dark times for Jewish families.
For the Jewish communities in the Houston area, Hanukkah began Dec. 7.
One of the central traditions of this nine-day event is the lighting of the candles on a menorah. The light can symbolize hope, according to spiritual leaders in Houston and the Bay Area.
How do you celebrate light and hope in a time of war?
Rabbis Eitan Krul of Clear Lake's Congregation Shaar Hashalom, Brian Strauss of the Congregation Beth Yeshurun in Houston, and Yitzchok Schmukler of Chabad of Bay Area explained how the observance of Hanukkah can have deeper meanings during times of war.
They all stress the symbolic gesture of the lighted candles, often in a window, a powerful message, they said, of hope.
One of the most rewarding aspects of being a reporter for me is how different stories bring with them a wealth of knowledge, and perspectives outside my own personal experience.
Learning more about Hanukkah and what it means was that kind of assignment.
