Why Houston's cooler weather could lead to angsty, low pressure tires.
I understand that it's our weather team's job to predict the weather, but now they're accurately predicting my car troubles.
This morning I started up my car to drive my kids to school, and I noticed my tire pressure light was on. I made a mental note to look into it, and then moved on with my life.
Until I opened the Chronicle home page and saw this headline by Justin Ballard, our newsroom meteorologist:
Has your tire pressure light come on? Why Houston's cooler weather could be to blame
It seems that many denizens of south Texas are facing the same tire dilemma.
"When the temperature drops, these air particles (inside tires) slow down," Justin explains. "As a result, your tire pressure drops, and your tires, feeling a tad deflated, become the pneumatic version of a sulky teenager."
So there you have it: the cold air is making our tires angsty. No word yet as to whether or not we can expect them to start listening to emo music.
Now if only the weather team can tell me why my check engine light is on. I keep getting an error code that indicates it has something to do with my gas cap, but I swear I torqued it correctly.
Have you observed the tire pressure phenomenon in your vehicle? Are you as surprised as I was to learn that cold weather can mess with tire pressure? Let's chat about it.
