Harris County Flood Control District secures $22M for detention basins along Cypress Creek.
A major flood mitigation project could impact the Cypress Creek watershed by protecting homes and businesses from future flooding.
The county is kicking off construction in the next six to nine months on three detention basins at T.C. Jester Boulevard south of Cypresswood Drive. At buildout these three detention basins will hold an estimated 300 million gallons of stormwater.
The project will be funded through a combination of state and federal dollars secured from local legislators, but it's not the only mitigation project in the area.
This month Jersey Village also announced that they received $9 million for flood mitigation to elevate 28 homes in the area. These home elevation grants of $4.43 million and $4.64 million will each be used to raise 14 homes three feet above the base flood elevation or the 100-year flood level. The projects aim to reduce flood damage, health and safety risks and clean-up costs.
Which flood relief project do you think local leaders should take on next?
