Battle for the North: Willis, Conroe ready for next chapter in budding rivalry

As we enter Week 4 of the high school football season, we are approaching the end of the first quarter.

The first three weeks have seen altered game times due to the annoying triple-digit heat that's been lingering.

Think cool thoughts as we head up to north to Montgomery County for a big District 13-6A matchup Friday night.

Willis (3-0) hosts Conroe (3-0) on homecoming night at Berton A. Yates Stadium. The Wildkats are newly ranked in the Class 6A state poll and chime in at No. 16 in the Chronicle's Class 6A rankings.

Conroe, situated less than 10 miles south of Willis, has historically been the bigger school. The programs had not met in varsity football in more than 80 years until 2020 when the Wildkats moved up to Class 6A.

This year, both teams are unbeaten through three weeks for the first time since 1971.

Willis five-star quarterback D.J. Lagway, a Florida commit, and a talented cast of playmakers will have their hands full with Conroe, a team with a strong defensive front.

Conroe leads the all-time series 2-1 and each team hopes to remain atop 13-6A with a win.

Three things to watch

Terry's time: Terry won a thriller last week to begin District 10-5A Division I action. The Rangers mounted a 96-yard scoring drive to beat Foster for the first time in a decade. The Rangers are aiming for a 2-0 start in district play as they travel to challenge Magnolia on Friday night.

Light week on the docket: There are a lot of Houston-area teams on bye this week with district play on the horizon. Here's a look at the top games of Week 4 with information and predictions.

Pool play: The road to San Antonio has a six-week path remaining. Take a look at the top UIL water polo teams from the Houston-area with the playoffs beginning in less than a month.

Shout out

After an injury-riddled start to his high school career, Friendswood quarterback Brock Foster made some physical changes. The senior signal-caller worked with his brother Zach, a personal trainer, to put on weight via nutrition and exercise. Foster threw five touchdown passes and ran for another in a win over Kempner last week.
