Where Only a Palace Will Do

PALACIO TRENOR, ASTURIAS

Where Only a Palace Will Do

It sounds incredibly ostentatious and, well, unearned to say that we will all be staying in a palace. Neither we nor our travelers are royalty (at least not that we know of) and we're not fans of the whole lord-over-these-lands approach to life.

However.

For the League of Travelers' Asturias journey (Sep 24-Oct 1, 2023), we make an exception. We will be staying in a palace, and we are happy to shout it from the rooftops. Or parapets, in this case.

That's because the Palacio Trenor in Figueras, Asturias is an exceptional place. Not just opulent or lordly, but a piece of living history that helps us tell unparalleled stories of the history of this region we love. And it has an open bar, well stocked, at which to tell those stories.

This property, also known as the Palacio de los Pardo Donlebún, has a history stretching back to 1368, too much to recount in this email. As a small window into the depth of human experience that has swept through these halls, we've been lucky enough to have dinners with a living member of the Donlebún family, who is always happy to speak with our travelers about a family tree that includes the first governor of Florida under Spanish rule. From resistance to the caliphate of al-Ándalus through the conquest of the Americas through the Spanish Civil War, these walls on the western border of Asturias have lived it all.

For us, the last 5 years have been no less important. The recent renovation of the property into a private luxury destination is a model for all of Europe. Extraordinary attention to detail and historical accuracy combined with a level of luxury that we can only call extreme. It is extremely comfortable, with a manager/GM, Chani, who is like family to us. The property, with its own chapel and gatehouses, gardens overflowing with fresh herbs that we collect for our gin tonics, is ours entirely for the days we are there. It is not a hotel; you cannot book a stay here on your own. But travel with us, and your room will be waiting.

We still have two rooms available at the palace and on the entire Asturias journey. If you're interested send us a note. And you can find all our other itineraries that still have space available, including in 2024, on the League site.
