The first election I covered as a newspaper editor and reporter, my mom and dad asked me how everything turned out. Their interest in local elections was piqued by one of their friends running for mayor in their little town. I'll never forget my response. "Remind me to wear a rain slicker and rain boots next time!" I salute all who have put their name on the dotted line. School board elections, or any for that matter, are not for the faint of heart. Board members receive no compensation for the long hours they spend inside and outside the boardroom. Thank you to all who are willing to serve, and please show civility during the process. Voting on Saturday begins at 7 a.m. and ends at 7 p.m. Please vote! More than 50 percent of your tax bill goes to the school district so it's critical to speak up. Have an opinion? Let me hear from you at dtaylor@houstonchronicle.com. |
