Friendswood residents are about to lose a store from a major chain, but something bright is on the horizon. Tuesday Morning, which filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection in February, is selling its inventory at discount prices before closing all its stores, including its location at 172 S. Friendswood Drive. It hasn't been determined what will replace the store, but whatever it is, it won't be far from Friendswood's downtown, where the One Sixty One mixed-use development is planned. That 5.5-acre development will be anchored by the city's first hotel and provide a hub for retail and hospitality activity. The city has begun painting murals on the some of the buildings adjacent to the One Sixty One site at South Friendswood Drive and West Shadowbend Avenue. In a previous newsletter, I mentioned the closing of Bed, Bath and Beyond because it reminded me of when Sears went out of business at Baybrook Mall in 2017. Tuesday Morning has been around since the mid-1970s; so that's a loss to local shoppers. But if you happen to drive along South Friendswood Drive and West Shadowbend Avenue, you might notice the floral and geometric-style murals created by artists Shelbi Nicole and Emily Ding that will complement the planned hotel. That's something everybody in Friendswood can enjoy. yorozco@houstonchronicle.com |
