Good news for the sort of people who love talking about single-stair reform: Joe Panzarella won the District C runoff over the weekend. While Joe and his fans were pretty excited to get the win, the race had been a largely sleepy affair for everyone except City Hall obsessives and urbanist activist-types. (Me, for example. And probably you if you’re reading this newsletter.)
That changed last week when Panzarella faced allegations of antisemitism after receiving the endorsement of CAIR Action, the political arm of the Council on American-Islamic Relations. Those allegations didn’t land. Not only did Panzarella win, but he actually did better on Election Day — after the campaign attack — than during early voting.
The sad reality is that there are plenty of other political campaigns across the state that brazenly traffic in antisemitism and play footsie with hate groups. Read my column about three campaigns in the partisan primary runoffs that deserve more scrutiny than Panzarella.
And don’t forget to cast your ballot in those primary runoffs. Early voting starts today and Election Day is May 26. These are the races where Republicans and Democrats pick their candidates for November. In gerrymandered seats, where the maps are drawn to benefit one party over the other, the primary races are essentially the election of consequence. You can vote in these runoffs even if you didn’t show up for the general primary, but you can’t switch parties if you cast your ballot in the first round back in March.

And we also want to know your endorsements — at least for tourists visiting Houston during the World Cup. If you could recommend just one thing every World Cup visitor should see, do or experience in Houston, what would it be and why?
