How to have a "The Devil Wears Prada 2" weekend in Houston.

Vibes: ✨

Designer bags. Luxe shoes. Florals.

Why you should do this:

I always wanted to be a fashion boy. In middle school, I tried hard. Not necessarily to fit in, but to create a style that commanded attention, that made people look and say, “wow.”

I layered bright colors. I cut my own hair, finally escaping the bowl cut I’d had for years. I wore double Swatch watches. I couldn’t afford name-brand high tops, so my mom bought me decent imitations.

It didn’t really work. Not because the looks were bad, but because I was trying too hard. I was less Miranda Priestly and more Andy Sachs.

I let it go in high school and college, focusing instead on classes and friendships. But slowly, as I started going out to clubs and embracing my identity, my style emerged. Lots of black shirts. Jeans of every variety — lace-up, boot cut, slim fit, ripped, rhinestoned, sequined. And shoes. So many shoes it quickly became an obsession.

I took risks, too. I spent a few years working the door at a popular nightclub and saw things I loved, hated, and never even imagined. Every night was a fashion show: sheer, leather, designer, secondhand, bling. It all filtered into my style. I went from blonde highlights to an eyebrow piercing to a shock of blue in my hair.

I found a tiny shop in Montrose, hidden among the resale stores on Westheimer, that sold incredible Japanese streetwear pieces. The owner, a laidback guy who loved to talk, pushed me to try things I never thought I could wear, mostly because I didn’t feel cool enough. I’m still sad that it closed. I just showed up one day, and it was gone.

Today, I’d describe my style as understated streetwear with a punch. I still love jeans, black, and T-shirts. But there’s always something that pops. Did I mention I love shoes? Sneakers, mostly.

I’m still no Miranda Priestly. And I’m not Andy Sachs anymore either. I’m still somewhere in between — and always wearing a great pair of shoes.

πŸ“ Our plan:

  • The Cottage Grocery for a chic and overpriced coffee run.
  • The Post Downtown for people watching, food, drinks and dancing.
  • See "The Devil Wears Prada 2" with friends at the River Oaks Theatre.
