How a surge in microschools could be the wildcard in Texas' $1B voucher program.

What is a microschool?

The term describes schools that blend homeschooling and traditional private education. They typically serve 100 students or fewer and share no single philosophy other than the belief that some children's needs are better served outside traditional school settings.

Microschools boomed during the pandemic and now serve roughly 1.5 million students nationwide. In Texas, the range of microschools is vast. Some are independent and resemble co-operative homeschooling, while others are backed by billionaires like Elon Musk.

Now, another boom could be coming as Texas rolls out its new $1 billion voucher program.

Elizabeth Sander and Isaac Yu explain.

  • Once again, we have changed our clocks for daylight saving time, and everyone, except for our friends in Arizona and Hawaii, feels a little off. Changing the clocks is bad for our health, so let's have Texas go to year-round standard time, writes the San Antonio Express-News Editorial Board.

A mysterious Spiderman has been popping up around Houston lately, and last night he appeared at the end of a police chase. The superhero even seemed to be briefly detained by police.

So, who is the person inside the suit?

When the Chronicle reached out through Instagram, Spiderman refused to answer questions or reveal his name, simply replying: "I'm Spiderman."
