Today's starting lineup

Live batting practices in early spring training tend to appear laid-back. Hitters may track pitches rather than swing. Pitchers will approach them for feedback upon leaving the mound. As Mike Burrows threw his first live batting practice of camp, manager Joe Espada made a point to watch the Houston Astros' new right-hander and observed — something else.

"He's got a little bit of red-ass in him, which I like a lot," Espada said. "He's got some intensity in him. I really like not only the stuff but the demeanor."

Matt Kawahara's latest dispatch from spring training.
