Are you a glass-half-full or half-empty person? Your answer may influence how you feel about the week’s two biggest stories...
On the one hand, Elon Musk merged his companies SpaceX and xAI into one $1.25 trillion mega-business, with the ambition to
make a "sentient sun" with satellite constellations that could supply the Earth with all of the computing power it needs for the AI revolution.
That’s all very exciting if you, like me, grew up reading science-fiction novels and dreaming of humanity ascending to the stars. But back here on terra firma we also have the suggestion – yet to be confirmed – that Nvidia
won't release any new gaming GPUs in 2026 due to the RAM crisis. And for that, of course, we can blame AI...
Given that Valve also
gave us some potentially negative news this week about the forthcoming Steam Machines, stating that "the limited availability and growing prices of these critical components mean we must revisit our exact shipping schedule and pricing", it's fair to say that while the AI future is ever closer, it's not all good news for tech fans.
Still, for this weekend at least you can take your mind off things with a sporting extravaganza. The Super Bowl takes place on Sunday, and
we've got a guide to how to watch it and some suggestions for last-minute deals that will boost your viewing experience. The T20 Cricket World Cup also begins this weekend, plus the Winter Olympics kicks off today – and as far as I know there’s no way AI can spoil any of it.
Until next week,
Marc McLaren, Global Editor-in-Chief
