Girls wrestling is one of the fastest-growing high school sports in the country.
During the 2024-25 school year, the sport attracted more than 74,000 participants nationwide, according to the National Federation of State High School Associations. Texas had the second most participants (7,141) of any state in 2024-25, trailing only California (8,831).
So what's the cause for this continued growth? I spoke with several coaches about the factors at play.
"There's the belief that if you work hard, you can have some success here," one prominent Houston-area coach said, "and we've got some really hard-working girls that come out for this sport."

⚾ Grand slam madness Tyce Armstrong made a grand entrance in his Baylor debut Friday. Armstrong hit three grand slams for the Bears in a 15-2 win over New Mexico State in Waco. Armstrong, a redshirt senior from Magnolia, became the second college player on record to hit three grand slams in one game. The only other time was by Louisville's Jim LaFountain — including two grand slams in one inning — in 1976 against Western Kentucky. |
