Four Houston-area softball teams will contend for softball state championships

Note: This newsletter is being sent out Tuesday due to the Memorial Day holiday Monday.

Happy Tuesday!

Welcome to the final week of the Texas high school softball season.

Four Houston-area teams will be competing for the ultimate prize at the UIL state championships at Red and Charline McCombs Field at the University of Texas in Austin on Friday and Saturday.

Clear Springs will try to conclude its historic season with another historic achievement. The Chargers are seeking the program's first state title in their first championship game appearance. Clear Springs (27-7) will face off against Waco Midway (31-3) for the Class 6A Division I crown at 4 p.m. Saturday.

Kingwood, meanwhile, will represent the Houston area in Class 6A Division II. The Mustangs are making their first state championship game appearance since 2013 and are also seeking their program's first title. Kingwood (33-4-1) will take on Forney (34-2-1) at 1 p.m. Saturday.

Barbers Hill is looking to secure the program's first title since 2021, a season in which they were one of the country's top-ranked teams. The Eagles (35-3) will take on No. 1 nationally ranked Melissa (37-1), which has established a new national home run record, at 7 p.m. Friday for the Class 5A Division I championship.

Lake Creek is aiming to complete the program's second undefeated season capture and third state championship in four years, a feat that has never been accomplished by a Houston-area softball team. The Lions (36-0) will battle Hallsville (36-5-1) at 4 p.m. Friday for the Class 5A Division II championship.

I'll be in Austin with photographer Jason Fochtman to bring you wall-to-wall coverage. Stay tuned!

⚾ LaViolette shows grit for Aggies

Former Tompkins High School star Jace LaViolette will leave the Texas A&M baseball program as the Aggies' all-time home run leader. But perhaps his most memorable feat will be what he accomplished last week at the SEC Tournament. After breaking his hand last Thursday, LaViolette had surgery Thursday night and returned to the lineup the following day. He then drove in two runs during the team's 4-3 loss to LSU. Texas A&M coach Michael Earley called the performance "one of the most unbelievable things I've ever seen."

Stat of the day

🥎 8.4: The number of runs per game during the playoffs for the Clear Springs softball team. The Chargers have been hot at the plate during the postseason, but their next opponent, Waco Midway, is allowing just 2.7 runs per game during that same span. Clear Springs has slugged 40 home runs and has a team batting average of .357 this season.
