Six people were injured early Sunday in a shooting at an "after-hours" nightclub in southwest Houston, police said. 

The sports bar was illegally serving alcohol after 2 a.m. at the time of the shooting, Asst. Chief James Skelton said. It's unclear if the business had a liquor license, he said. 

At the time of Sunday's shooting, Skelton said the nightclub was "pretty packed" even though it should have been closed and not serving alcohol. 

Law enforcement has struggled to crack down on violent crimes surrounding unregulated and after-hours nightclubs in Houston and Harris County.
