Texans loss to Jets revealed alarming issues

The Houston Texans' 21-13 loss to the New York Jets — a dysfunctional franchise that fired its coach after four games — revealed a host of issues for this offense.

No. 1, its offensive line is getting worse.

Quarterback C.J. Stroud was sacked a career-high eight times and pressured on 46.7% of his drop-backs.

No. 2, they have a second half problem. They've been outscored in the second half of games 122-82. While teams have made second-half adjustments, the Texans have not.

I was chatting with a source on Friday who indicated that DeMeco Ryans had a lot of thinking to do over the weekend after the game on how he could fix this offense.

The Texans organization knows that it's a problem.

Unfortunately, there are not many solutions as to how to fix that problem in a short time period. The Texans could make a coaching change mid-season, and fire offensive line coach Chris Strausser, but finding a quality candidate to replace him is a gamble in itself.

Trading for a left guard is also difficult. There aren't many clear upgrades available for trades, and even then, the Texans have no cap space to make a move.

The only way they win a Super Bowl this year, is if they remain relatively healthy and figure out the best offensive line combination and improve.

Nico Collins is eligible to return from the injured reserve this week. His addition to the lineup should help some. But like Stroud said Thursday, their issues are bigger than Collins.

Let's see if Ryans will figure it out.

What are you hearing trade wise? -- @Just.A.Tad

JMA: Everything I'm hearing is that the Texans are not likely to make a move. They have just $5.9 million in cap space, so in order to facilitate a quality move, they'd have to restructure contracts of a few of their own players by 3 p.m. today or require a team they are trading with to take on the majority of that players' money.  Knowing the Texans situation, few teams would be willing to do that unless desperate. And the Texans restructuring the contracts of their players means they'd assigning money to future years, which they don't want to do.

Do you see the Texans addressing OL or receiver room by the deadline? -- @maize

JMA: If the Texans make a move, it will likely be to sign a player in free agency. I don't see a trade happening for the reasons I mentioned above.

If the team continues to underperform on offense, would we see a change at OC? - Mauricio Rios

JMA: No, I don't see this happening. You don't fire someone after one bad year. The Texans are more likely to fire their offensive line coach Chris Strausser than they are Bobby Slowik. Slowik hasn't had a great year, but firing him would be an over reaction, and would not help mid-season.

Texans Trivia!

Last week's question: The Texans and Jets have had several players who have played for both franchises, including three current players.

Name all three players.

This week's answer: Neville Hewitt, Del'Shawn Phillips, Foley Fatukasi. Shoutout to Alex Schroller for being the first to answer this correctly! He was actually the only person to get it right.

The next Trivia question will be in Thursday's newsletter.

This was my favorite photo from staff photographer Brett Coomer. He got the moment Garrett Wilson made that one-handed catch over rookie Kamari Lassiter. He looked like Michael Jordan's Jumpman in the air. If Nike doesn't offer him a contract immediately, I don't know what they are doing. There was really nothing Lassiter could do.

Joe's Pizza is one of the most well-known pizza shops in New York. And it was good.

My NYC food review

I went to Joe's Pizza, one of the most well-known pizza shops in New York. And it was good. The pepperoni pizza was solid. They served it out to me quickly. But I'm huge on pizza sauce. Pizza sauce and quality of toppings make the pizza for me. Quality of the cheese is third.

This sauce wasn't spectacular. I'd give it an 7.5 out of 10.

So while it was good, I was hoping for more.
