Well, that was a week.
It included a feature I've really come to enjoy writing — my roundup of the 10 best dishes I ate during the month.
Without fail, that piece grounds me in the freewheeling dining landscape of the city we call home. And it gives me juice to keep on driving and web-surfing and tasting and thinking about our endlessly mutating civic menu.
Oh, and by the way: the smoked prime rib sandwich at Andiron really is all that. Save your money and check it out. You can sit at the bar and try one of the fascinating new cocktails dreamed up by Angel Bautista, who beefed up his repertoire while interning at Handshake Speakeasy in Mexico City, tapped this year as North America's Best Bar by the World's 50 Best combine.
In a similar vein, I rounded up the dishes that made the most indelible impressions on our Top 100 team as we reported the list. I bet you'll find a few worth chasing down among these bangers.
In terms of news I can use, Bao Ong profiled a Heights newcomer, Herand's Kitchen, owned by a Persian/Armenian chef who mixes Persian and Greek ideas, as he does in his own home kitchen. I look forward to trying it out.
Ong also chronicled the demise of the original Post Oak Grill location, the epitome of 1990s power-lunching, due in no small part to its proximity to the home of the late George and Barbara Bush.
And J.C. "Chris" Reid, our well-traveled barbecue correspondent, described the small-town LaVaca BBQ in a way that made me want to hop in the car and go. Central Texas meets Mexican? Cochinita pork steak with pico, red onions and blue corn tortillas? I want it.
