Donald Trump wins presidency, defeating Kamala Harris

Millions of Texans (including Beyoncé) headed to the polls Tuesday to ultimately reelect former President Donald Trump as America's 47th President. Meanwhile, several local races were too close to call early Wednesday morning. Here's what we know about the 2024 election results so far.

Across the nation: Trump clinched the presidency against Vice President Kamala Harris early Wednesday morning, having already delivered a speech touting his campaign's success hours earlier. Down ballot Republicans seized control of the U.S. Senate for the first time in four years.

In Texas: Unsurprisingly, both former President Donald Trump and U.S. Senator Ted Cruz carried the state, while the state's top courts remained securely in the hands of Republicans.

Closer to home: In Houston voters resoundingly voted against the $4.4 billion HISD bond, forcing the district to delay much-needed facility improvements due largely to voters' mistrust of state-appointed Superintendent Mike Miles. Meanwhile, the Harris County District Attorney and Sheriff races remained too close to call early Wednesday morning.

Key takeaways: Democrats had high hopes that Texas would inch closer to them, but the opposite happened as both Donald Trump and Ted Cruz ran up the margins in their races, writes political reporter Jeremy Wallace. Sign up for Texas Take to get more post-election news and analysis straight to your inbox.
