Good afternoon, Houston!
With the firing of Harris County-Houston Sports Authority CEO Janis Burke on Friday, it's safe to say the most powerful stakeholders in our local professional sports scene are unhappy.
Mayor John Whitmire cited a "lack of transparency and communication" from the sports authority, specifically with the timing of Houston's preparations to host seven games of the 2026 FIFA World Cup.
John Arnold, a local billionaire who was the chairman of the city's bid for the World Cup and recently chosen as a city representative to the sports authority board, was first to bring concerns about the sports authority, according to the mayor.
Whitmire also said major sponsors of Houston sports teams, including Chevron and NRG, came to him with concerns about stadiums not being properly maintained.
Read the reporting from Abby Church and Danielle Lerner here. It will be interesting to see how the city and county move forward.
Now, the rest of the news.
