Good morning.

Only one week to go until the start of early voting on October 16 and 21. We plan to have our endorsements out by then for every contested Harris County race. Some of you already have your mail-in ballots spread out on your dining table. Check out the endorsement section of the Chronicle's Voter Guide for a list of the picks we've already published.

Curious about how we make our endorsements? Join us for a private Zoom at 12:30 p.m. CST on Wednesday, October 16 with Opinion Editor Lisa Falkenberg, Deputy Editor Raj Mankad and Op-ed Editor Lisa Gray. We'll be discussing key issues and races, including our forthcoming recommendation regarding the $4.4 billion Houston ISD bond.

Readers are often surprised that we have candidates come to our offices and sit together face-to-face. The format isn't like a debate. After opening statements, we guide the conversation with questions. When a candidate says something unclear, we follow up with more questions until we get as close to fully understanding their differences as we can. We also encourage candidates to ask each other questions. The in-person screenings are only part of the process. We spend a great deal of time calling sources, people who have special knowledge of, say, the felony courts. We look at news coverage, background checks and whatever data we can find that's relevant. Are we sure we've covered every angle? No, but we do our best to be thorough and share our thinking so you can come to your own conclusions.
