Free Agency
In the Cheap Seats, Chron sports writers answer burning questions from readers.
Will the Astros make a splash in free agency this winter?
Chron sports reporter Michael Shapiro:
Juan Soto is staying in New York (either the Bronx or Queens) and I'm skeptical Houston will splurge for 30-and-over players eyeing $100-plus-million deals (first baseman Pete Alonso and pitcher Blake Snell top that list). Instead, expect the Astros to stay seriously engaged in the Alex Bregman bidding, where a push from Jose Altuve could make ownership pay the $200-million-or-so necessary to retain the star third baseman.
Allow Bregman to walk, and Houston fans will be rightly despondent. And don't expect a spending spree to follow, either. For Houston, two paths are ahead this offseason: sign Bregman and reload for another pennant push, or hit the reset button as a franchise, eyeing a title chase in 2026 and beyond if Bregman walks.
