Today's starting lineup

The Texans are officially back to work with Thursday's opening day of training camp. C.J. Stroud, arguably the NFL's biggest breakout star last year, knows the challenge will be greater in 2024 with Houston not sneaking up on opponents. Will Anderson Jr., last year's NFL Defensive Rookie of the Year, arrived at training camp bigger but carrying a lighter load mentally. As for the first day on the field, here are some observations from our reporters.

With the All-Star break over, the Astros are back in action tonight for a high-stakes series in Seattle that could see Houston take the lead in the American League West. For those looking ahead, next year's schedule is out, with the Mets visiting to start the season.

Texas and Texas A&M haven't played each other in football since 2011, but rest assured, the rivalry rages on among current players, writes Kirk Bohls. One of the bedrocks of the new Mike Elko era at A&M is accountability. Here's more from SEC Media Days in our notebook.

The Rockets fall to 2-2 in summer league with a loss to the Timberwolves that highlighted rookie Reed Sheppard's ability to bounce back.

Stat of the day: 2-5. The Astros' record against the Mariners this season in two series, one each in Houston and Seattle.

Falling short
