Hi Houston,

It's been a long couple of weeks, hasn't it? I hope y'all are hanging in there and that you and your families are safe, and that we can make it at least a few months without another major disaster. Between the derecho and Beryl, I've been finding myself wondering if Mike Miles and the administrators that followed him here from Dallas and Third Future knew exactly what they were getting themselves into when they chose to move to Houston.

Our whole newsroom has been in hurricane mode these past two weeks but our wonderful education team still has some HISD news for you. Before we get to that, though, I wanted to let you know that I have taken a new position at the Chronicle and won't be on the HISD team moving forward. While I'm not quite ready to announce the details just yet, I can say that my new beat will be pretty broad in scope, and I'm confident it will hold continued opportunities for education coverage

I asked Jennifer to let me write one more newsletter because I wanted to thank you, our core audience, for driving some of the most challenging and meaningful work of my career. Covering such an important, divisive issue as the HISD takeover could be exhausting, but seeing how much these schools meant to parents, students and staff of HISD made me want to give you my best with every story.

I have never seen a community so impassioned as those who care about public education — all of you, from the district's harshest critics to its strongest champions, have my deep respect, and I leave this position confident that Megan, Nusaiba and the rest of the team will continue to bring you the coverage you deserve.

Sorry for the long post. If you've made it this far, thank you for indulging me. And for everything else, thank you, thank you, thank you.

HISD Board of Managers questions $4.4B school bond proposal

We've been hearing "no trust, no bond" from community members at HISD board meetings for the last several months, but Tuesday was the first time we got to hear the Board of Managers weigh in on the historic $4.4 billion proposal themselves.

After hearing from members of the school bond Community Advisory Committee last month, multiple board members questioned the need to spend $425 million on four career and technical education centers, suggesting instead that the money may be better spent on more rebuilds and renovations of existing schools.

Miles argued that the new CTE centers are necessary because it's not financially feasible to develop equitable, quality career programs at all of the district's high schools.

The board is expected to vote Aug. 8 on whether the bond will appear on the Nov. 5 ballot. Read more about Tuesday's workshop here
