Today's starting lineup
Yordan Alvarez returned and had an immediate impact Thursday and the Astros' bats awoke in the nick of time to salvage a series victory over the lowly White Sox. Rising prospect Jake Bloss will come up from Double-A Corpus Christi to start tonight against the Orioles. A stint on the injured list is a possibility for Victor Caratini after being shaken up in a collision this week.
UH makes a major move, firing athletic director Chris Pezman after six-plus years on the job.
Today's Rockets draft scouting report looks at UConn guard Stephon Castle, who brings defensive versatility, but his shooting may be a red flag.
Left-hander Ryan Prager is supposed to mark the future of Texas A&M's baseball program, but he's having a big impact on the present as the Aggies play for the national championship this weekend in Omaha.
Dash goalie Jane Campbell will be in the fold for a while after agreeing to a multi-year contract extension.
Stat of the day: 1. Player in Astros history to start at seven different positions in the field: Mauricio Dubón, who this season has started at left field (17 games), center field (14), right field (3), first base (4), second base (3), third base (3) and shortstop (1).

Sudden impact
Yordan Alvarez's presence was felt immediately in his return to the Astros' lineup Thursday against the White Sox, helping Houston leave Chicago with a series victory.
- Better late than never: The Astros avoided a series loss to the MLB-worst White Sox thanks to a four-run rally in the seventh inning Thursday.
- Bloss' time: Jake Bloss, a 2023 draftee who's risen through the Astros system, will make his big league debut in tonight's series opener against the Orioes.
- Caratini update: Catcher Victor Caratini could be facing time on the injured list after a collision at the plate in Chicago this week.
- Orioles at Astros preview: Baltimore visits for a three-game series beginning tonight and leads the majors with 119 long balls, including 22 from second-year shortstop Gunnar Henderson.
- Postseason coming to Sugar Land: The Space Cowboys had an excellent first half and will play for the Pacific Coast League championship in September, their first playoff berth as the Astros' top affiliate.
- Cherished time: Former Astros manager Dusty Baker, who was close with Willie Mays, says something told him to go see his longtime friend this week. Mays died a day after the visit.

Scouting report: Stephon Castle
Although Stephon Castle is a do-it-all solid defender who was a major contributor to UConn's championship, his shooting needs work as the Rockets mull whether to take him with their third overall pick in next week's draft.
