Highly-anticipated Phat Eatery restaurant from late chef Alex Au-Yeung opens in Grogan's Mill

Chef Alex Au-Yeung's friends and employees Kevin Lee and Marvin He are fulfilling his dreams of opening a restaurant in The Woodlands without him.

Au-Yeung, the James Beard semifinalist and chef-owner of Katy Malaysian restaurant Phat Eatery, died of cancer at 52 earlier this year. The newest Phat Eatery opened yesterday, coinciding with the sixth anniversary of Au-Yeung's original restaurant.

Like the Katy restaurant, the interior resembles a night market, complete with nods to Malaysian culture including lanterns, native plants and a motif of the country's prime minister. Unlike the flagship, the newest restaurant is nearly triple the size of the Katy space and comes complete with a $20,000 table in its private dining room. A portrait of Au-Yeung graces one wall, courtesy of his friends at No Label Brewing.

Approachable dishes including black pepper beef, roti canai and beef rendang will grace the menu at the former Fuddrucker's location. Learn more about Au-Yeung's legacy and the highly-anticipated opening here.

The new opening coincides with the soft opening of Houston-based Greek restaurant Niko Niko's, which soft opened its newest location in the former Luby's on Lake Front Circle this week. More on that below.
