Today's starting lineup

It was another head-scratching loss for the Astros on Wednesday against the Giants.

Framber Valdez, whose two starts before Wednesday were arguably his best of the season — seven one-run innings against the Twins, followed by a complete game in Anaheim — lasted only four innings and 59 pitches in what became a 5-3 loss.

The outing continued an uneven first half for Valdez. Of the 30 runs he has allowed this season, 18 have come in three starts. He owns a 3.99 ERA in 11 outings.

The loss finished a 3-3 road trip and Houston is at 31-38 with a day off on Thursday before facing Detroit at home on Friday. The Astros had hoped to have Kyle Tucker back by then but that appears unlikely.

The NBA lost an icon with the passing of Jerry West, the Lakers player and executive with several teams. Jonathan Feigen describes West as one of  basketball's biggest giants, whether he knew it or not.

Texas A&M enters the College World Series on Saturday and will be without starting pitcher Shane Sdao, who injured his arm.

Stat of the day: 3.18. The Astros starting pitchers have a solid 3.18 ERA in their last 20 games yet the team is just 10-10 in that stretch.
