Today's starting lineup

Before Game 2 of the NBA Finals between the Celtics and Mavericks tonight, former Rockets coach Rudy Tomjanovich will receive the NBA Coaches Association's Chuck Daly Lifetime Achievement Award.

The honor comes 30 years after Tomjanovich made all the right moves in leading the Rockets to the first of two NBA titles. Rudy T's  unwillingness to draw attention to himself might explain why it has taken so long for Tomjanovich's triumphs to be fully appreciated.

"I was stunned, because it came from out of the blue," Tomjanovich says.

Whether you remember the Rockets' title like it was yesterday, or don't know much about Rudy T, take a few minutes to read Jonathan Feigen's perspective on the award.

Also, Chronicle readers are invited to a private Zoom chat at noon on Tuesday to celebrate the 30th anniversary of the Rockets' first NBA championship with former players Mario Elie and Matt Bullard. Click this link to register for the event.

Switching back to a busy Saturday in sports, the Astros got another strong start from Hunter Brown to beat the Angels. At 30-35, they are inching closer to .500. Joey Loperfido is also back with the team after Kyle Tucker went on on the injured list. Matt Kawahara looks at how Loperfido could be used on his second time up in the big leagues.

At the state baseball tournament, Tomball won its first title since 2013 with  a 4-1 win over Pearland in an all-Houston final in Class 6A.

In College Station, Texas A&M got a 10-6 win over Oregon to start its super regional series but it came at a cost. Outfielder Braden Montgomery was lost for the rest of the postseason with a leg injury.

A few hours after A&M's win, the College Station campus turned into a big party for more than 85,000 fans as Brazil and Mexico met in an international friendly. The soccer match, won by Brazil, drew the third-largest crowd in the MexTour history.

It was a party atmosphere at the Golf Club of Houston for the second round of the LIV Golf event. When the music died down, four were tied for the individual lead heading into Sunday's finale.

The outrage of the day, in some quarters, was the news that Caitlin Clark wasn't selected to the U.S. women's basketball team for the Paris Olympics. Ann Killion explains why that shouldn't be a surprise for those paying attention to the sport.

Stat of the day: 7. Number of UH sprinters to win the 100 meters at the NCAA championships. Louie Hinchliffe is the latest after his win on Friday. He joins Carl Lewis (1981), Stanley Floyd (1982), Joe DeLoach (1988), Leroy Burrell (1990), Sam Jefferson (1994), and Cameron Burrell (2018).
