Today's starting lineup

We knew it was coming based on reports in recent days, but when the Astros made it offical on Wednesday — pitchers Cristian Javier and José Urquidy would be out for the season with elbow sugery — it still hit hard.

Both pitchers are facing Tommy John surgery — the doctors won't know for sure until they start the procedure — and are the third and fourth Astros' pitchers who have had the procedure in the last 13 months. GM Dana Brown doesn't see a problem with the Astros' pitching program and says 'injuries happen.'

On the field, the Astros missed a chance to sweep the Cardinals as Ronel Blanco paid for a walk on a questionable call.

The Texans were back on the field for the second day of minicamp. Will Anderson Jr. and Kamari Lassiter were among the standouts.

The LIV Golf tour comes to Houston this week. Here are 10 players to watch in the new event.

In college track, UH got off to a strong start in the pole vault and sprint prelims. The UH women's relay will be in action on Thursday and come with an interesting training story. Joseph Duarte has the details.

In the NBA Finals, Rockets' forward Jabari Smith is serving as a correspondent for NBA programming. He surprised Boston's Jayson Tatum with a very honest question.

With the NBA draft getting closer, Zaccharie Risacher is a name to watch. His stock is rising so fast he could be gone before the Rockets pick at No. 3.

Save the date: Chronicle readers are invited to a private Zoom chat at noon on Tuesday, June 11 to celebrate the 30th anniversary of the Rockets' first NBA championship with former players Mario Elie and Matt Bullard. Click this link to register for the event.

Dana Brown won't throw blame at pitching program, says 'injuries happen'

With Cristian Javier and José Urquidy his latest starters to go down, the GM notes MLB as a whole has seen a number of pitchers sidelined.

  • Two big losses: José Urquidy will have his second elbow surgery Wednesday while Cristian Javier's procedure is scheduled for Thursday.
  • All about Tommy John: As more Astros pitchers have season-ending elbow surgery, we explain Tommy John surgery and how pitchers perform after having the procedure.
  • A bad ball: What might have been an easy inning for Ronel Blanco turned into a two-run frame that proved pivotal in his loss to the Cardinals.
  • Cardinals 4, Astros 2: Houston's bid for a sweep comes up short as offense is limited to pair of homers.
  • Roster moves: Nick Hernandez, who pitched for UH, was activated after being acquired in trade.
  • June bloom: June's schedule is much more favorable for Houston, with at least one day off each week and two in a four-day span near the month's end.
  • Injury report: Kyle Tucker missed a second game in a row after fouling a ball off his shin on Monday.

  • On the rise: Zaccharie Risacher, a 6-9 forward and smooth-shooting 19-year-old, drew Hawks executives to one of his European games and may well be taken by the time the Rockets pick third.
