For two years, the editorial board has visited McReynolds Middle School where children are forced to crawl under or climb over stalled trains operated by Union Pacific. We captured it in stunning videos that have now gone viral on social media. Please take the time to watch and read our editorial. The problem isn't new, but we want this to be more than another train news cycle. The federal government has grants available to build underpasses and bridges. UP makes billions in profit. We need to bring sustained attention from concerned Houstonians demanding solutions.
One full year into the state takeover of Houston ISD, we just published five different views on how it's gone. State-appointed Superintendent Mike Miles defends his record and celebrates higher test scores. Former U.S. Secretary of Education and HISD Superintendent Rod Paige says that if a turnaround works here it will pen "a new playbook for urban school transformation" across America. The voices of protest include the star English teacher Jennifer Mathieu Blessington who resigned from Bellaire High School; parent Robbie McDonough whose children attend schools where the principals have reportedly been asked to resign; and state Rep. Christina Morales, who described what she saw during a tour of one of Miles' reformed schools as "humiliating."
We want to know what you think. Are you frustrated with stalled trains? More letters on HISD are always welcome. Send us your thoughts to viewpoints@houstonchronicle.com.
