Thanks to a $10 billion funding bill passed last year, several cities and agencies are teaming up with private developers to back natural gas power plants. If built, these plants would add over 55 gigawatts to the Texas grid, almost doubling ERCOT's current gas capacity.
In Sugar Land, city officials are looking to join forces with a Finnish developer Wärtsilä to build a new 135-megawatt natural gas power plant near the Sugar Land Regional Airport.
Mayor Joe Zimmerman said that the city's interest in building a power plant was sparked by the tragic deaths during Winter Storm Uri in 2021. Four residents died in a house fire that started when they tried to light a fire to keep warm.
Sugar Land officials said things are still in the early stages, and they don't yet have details about the plant's construction and operation.
