Buying a home in Harris County took 2.7 years of income in 1980. Guess how many it took in 2022.
As someone who suffers a mild panic attack from simply looking at an Excel spreadsheet, I am constantly in awe of the projects our data team puts together.
Our data team studied home values in Harris and surrounding counties and determined that it would have taken 2.7 years of income to buy a home in 1980.
That number is obviously different now, but by how much? How much harder is it to buy a home today?
Not only did our team plug the numbers, they made it into a fun interactive. The interactive also has data for Fort Bend County, so most of Katy is accounted for in the data.
Check out their interactive and let me know what you think. Does the information surprise you? Did you guess correctly? Email me and share your thoughts.

Shout out
Last week I talked about a displaced family of ducks that somehow managed to find themselves trapped on the Westpark Tollway. In my newsletter, I mused that no one knew where the ducks came from or how they ended up on the roadway.
Shout out to Katy Insider Jane, a bird specialist at the Wildlife Center of Texas for emailing me this plausible theory:
"I don't drive the Westpark Tollway, but I'm guessing there's a big tree alongside it, not too far from where the ducks were spotted. Whistlers nest in trees, and, like most ducks, although the eggs are laid over successive days, the clutch all hatches at the same time. The mother flies to the ground and calls the babies to jump out of the tree to her, so that she can take them to water and food. You could probably find the nest."
One last thing ...
