Today's starting lineup

The Astros are back in action tonight in New York, sitting at .500 for the first time since opening day. Matt Kawahara takes a closer look at nine stats that provide insight into the team's climb back to level. Tonight's game against the Mets is a streaming exclusive and won't be on the regular TV platform. Here's how to watch it.

They had one pick entering Thursday's second round of the NBA draft, but the Rockets opted to trade it, acquiring forward A.J. Griffin from the Hawks, getting them a player they eyed two years ago when he came out of Duke. Of local interest, UH star Jamal Shead's wait ends when the Raptors took him in the second round. Next month, the Rockets will get the first look at Bronny James, LeBron's son and the Lakers' second-round pick, in the summer league opener. Tyler Smith, who played at Bush for two years, goes to Milwaukee in round two.

Jonathan M. Alexander chats with new Texans linebacker Azeez Al-Shaair, whose journey to the NFL included some adversity.

Texas basketball lands a key frontcourt player in ex-Kansas State forward Arthur Kaluma. Meantime, defending league champion UH learns its Big 12 opponents for next season.

The last hurdle in Simone Biles' Olympic comeback bid arrives with the U.S. gymnastics trials in Minneapolis.

Stat of the day: 3.26. The Astros' team ERA in their past 44 games, the second-lowest in baseball since May 9 behind the Phillies (2.91). Houston's ERA was 5.05 for the season's first 36 games.

Finally getting their man

Two years after initially coveting him, the Rockets will have A.J. Griffin — whose father played in Houston — in the fold after acquiring him in a draft-day trade with the Hawks.

  • Shead heads north: Former UH star Jamal Shead is heading north of the border after being selected by the Toronto Raptors during the second round of the NBA draft.
  • Save the date: The Rockets are set to get the first look at Bronny James, son of LeBron James and a second-round draftee, in their summer league opener against the Lakers.
  • Bucks stop at Smith: Tyler Smith, who played his freshman and sophomore years at Bush High School before moving on to Overtime Elite and the G League, was selected by Milwaukee in the second round.
  • Day 2 log: A look at how the second day of the NBA draft played out Thursday.
  • Reviews are in: Although the pick didn't get a lot of attention from national sports shows, draft experts are raving about the Rockets getting Reed Sheppard in the draft.

One last hurdle

If seven-time Olympic medalist Simone Biles secures a spot in the Paris Games at this week's U.S. gymnastics trials in Minneapolis, she'll cap a comeback that is remarkable but not entirely unprecedented.
