Today's starting lineup
Trailing after seven innings usually has spelled doom for the Astros in 2024. They bucked that season-long trend Monday night by rallying for four runs in the eighth inning, with Yainer Diaz delivering a tiebreaking two-run homer, for a series-opening win over the Cardinals. That came despite Kyle Tucker's departure after fouling a ball off his leg. Before the game, general manager Dana Brown doubled down on his belief the team wouldn't be a trade-deadline seller. Monday marked the 10-year anniversary of Jon Singleton's MLB debut in a career that has defied convention. The Cardinals' first visit to Houston in eight years also marked a homecoming for rookie shortstop Masyn Winn, who grew up a big Astros fan in Kingwood.

In the nick of time
The Astros were 1-24 this season when trailing after seven innings. Big home runs from Yainer Diaz and Alex Bregman bucked the trend in Monday's comeback win over the Cardinals.
- Selling still not in the picture: Monday's win still leaves Houston seven games under .500, but GM Dana Brown believes the team is too good not to turn things around and anticipates being in buying mode by the trade deadline.
- Far from the norm: Astros first baseman Jon Singleton didn't come close to meeting the expectations of his first big league contract, But he did gain perspective while away from baseball.
- Royal pain: Astros outfielder Kyle Tucker exited Monday's game against the Cardinals and is day-to-day after fouling a ball off his shin.
- Seeking another opinion: Right-hander José Urquidy will see a doctor who specializes in elbow reconstruction after suffering a recent setback.
- Something to savor: Masyn Winn hadn't been to Minute Maid for an Astros game since the 2017 ALDS but he was back as a rookie for the Cardinals to face Justin Verlander
- Sidelined on farm: Astros prospect Jacob Melton is on the mend after a wrist injury sidelined him for the past two weeks at Double-A Corpus Christi.
