Good morning, Houston.

Happy Wednesday, everyone. Are you still miffed that the ice cream wizards in Brenham retired one of your favorite flavors? Has life not been the same since Creole Cream Cheese went away? Well here's your chance to potentially bring back your favorite flavor through the Great Scoop Revival Flavor Tournament by Blue Bell Ice Cream. In all, (sweet) 16 flavors will be in the mix for a chance to return to store shelves in 2025. The contest ends Friday.

⛅ Temperature check: High of 96; low of 79. Justin's insight: Houston's storm risk may be a bit higher today, thanks to a subtle shift in the heat domeSign up for the weekly Weather Radar newsletter for more coverage.

Best of the Bayou

Today we're talking about that big new development going up near Hockley...

If you read one thing: A 1,000-home master-planned community is coming to the Hockley area.

Where is it and how big will it be?

The yet-to-be-named project, led by Houston-based Johnson Development, will encompass 318 acres along the Grand Parkway south of FM 2920. Johnson Development bought the land in October, but it just recently struck a $41.8 million loan agreement with First Continental to help fund the development. It's the largest loan for First Continental, a Houston-based private lender founded 30 years ago. Builders so far include Drees Homes, Perry Homes and Westin Homes.

The development is just one of a few going up around Hockley. This project, and the others in development, are expected to bring up to 11,000 new homes there, potentially transforming the once-rural community.

📰 Need to Know

  • The Trump-Biden debate isn't about Texas, but isn't it? While the messages on Thursday may be aimed largely at swing voters in Wisconsin, Georgia and Arizona, the topics will be unmistakably Texan.
  • Baylor surgeon continues to treat patients despite whistleblower allegations. One of three Houston heart surgeons accused of improperly performing overlapping surgeries continues to treat patients in his leadership role at Baylor College of Medicine, which maintained on Tuesday that the doctor "did nothing wrong."
  • The first presidential debate is Thursday. Here's what you need to know. While there are still more than 130 days until Election Day, this debate is set to be a major showdown between the two presumptive candidates in the general election.

💼 Business

  • Upcoming Firefly Aerospace mission will be launching small satellites into space. The eight satellites are part of NASA's CubeSat Launch Initiative, which allows nonprofits, colleges and universities and other educational programs the opportunities to create items meant for space.

🚗 Outside the Loop

  • A Houston boy with cancer was bullied at a gas station. He's turning it into a teachable moment. Houston's Devarjaye "DJ" Daniel, who was sworn in by more than 800 law enforcement agencies across the country, said he wants to teach kids how to stand up for themselves.
  • Former Woodlands Luby's transforms into newest Niko Niko's restaurant. The new restaurant incorporates many classic Greek and American staples that come from the original Houston sandwich shop, including Greek- and American-influenced sandwiches and pita plates. But it also hosts new twists.
  • Miami-based Pincho Burgers and Kebabs opens new location in Katy. The burgers feature a Latin-American twist on traditional American burgers. The ketchup, for example, is made with guava.

⚾ Houston vs. All Y'all

  • Astros ride Hunter Brown to 6th straight win. In beating the Rockies, Houston pulled within a game of .500 for the first time since opening day.
  • Astros relievers Luis Contreras and Bryan King share circuitous path to MLB debuts. Sunday was a day to savor for the latest two pitchers among the 28 Houston has used this year.
  • Astros injuries: 'Slow progress' for Justin Verlander and Kyle Tucker nears running. Verlander could return Monday from the injured list, but he is making "slow progress" with his neck injury, manager Joe Espada said.
  • A jarring 24 hours for Aggies: Jim Schlossnagle goes to UT after a loss in the CWS. In three seasons, he got Texas A&M close to its first national title. Now, he's headed to Austin and the Longhorns.
  • Rockets acquire future draft assets in deal with Nets. At its core, the deal gives Houston one more first-round pick than it previously had beyond this year.

Are Houston beaches nice?

Wait, what Houston beaches? Sylvan Beach? Some sliver of sand near Lake Houston? For the purposes of the latest Houston Explained, Andrew Dansby wrote about the rather obvious large beach to our southeast, in Galveston. And whether you think Galveston is a nice beach largely depends your expectations of one.
