5 Fort Bend County charter schools and what they offer
Charter schools offer an alternative for families who don't want their children to go to traditional public schools but either can't or don't want to pay private school tuition.
The number of charter students in Texas has grown from 2,412 in 1996-97 to about 375,000 in 2022, according to Texas Education Agency statistics.
Charter schools must be nonprofit in Texas and are publicly funded, tuition-free, independent schools, founded by teachers, parents, nonprofit organizations or community groups.
The founders create a charter, a legal document outlining the school's mission, goals, curriculum, financing and governance structure, which then must be approved by the TEA. The approval may be contingent upon meeting certain conditions or requirements specified by the TEA.
