Today we're talking about the Texas primary runoff...

If you read one thing: The Texas primary runoff election is today. Polling locations will be open from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. Runoff elections typically see low turnout, which means a relatively small number of votes could decide several races.

What races are some of the notable statewide races?

In Beaumont, Texas House Speaker Dade Phelan is fighting for his political career in a contentious race against oil and gas consultant David Covey after notable figures like Texas Gov. Greg Abbott and Attorney General Ken Paxton derided him as a fake conservative, though the past two legislative sessions — under Phelan's watch — have been widely considered the most conservative in the state's history

Other Texas Republican incumbents are fending off rightward challengers across the state, and rural Republican voters will cast deciding votes as Abbott attempts to oust opponents of his school voucher plan

What are the key local races in this primary runoff?

In Houston, State Rep. Jarvis Johnson and state Sen. Molly Cook are running to be the Democratic nominee for District 15's state Senate seat.  After winning a special election earlier this month, Cook is currently serving the rest of Whitmire's term.

Democratic voters in state House District 146 will choose between incumbent state Rep. Shawn Thierry and union organizer Lauren Ashley Simmons in a race partly centered on Thierry's controversial choice last year to vote with Republicans to ban gender-affirming care for transgender youth.

Vivian King and Gemayel Haynes are competing to be Democrats' judicial nominee for the newly created 486th District Court bench. King serves as one of District Attorney Kim Ogg's top staffers, while Haynes represents indigent defendants for the Harris County Public Defender's Office.

How can I keep up with election results?

The Houston Chronicle will be reporting on the election throughout the day, and you can keep up with live results at houstonchronicle.com after polls close at 7 p.m.

📰 Need to Know

  • Storm devastation compounds threat of 'dangerous heat': Houston's Memorial Day weather capped a week of power outages and storm recovery from a windy derecho, leaving residents ill-prepared for "extremely dangerous heat conditions."
  • Groups that offer support for Houston veterans and Gold Star families: Memorial Day is celebrated once a year, but support for veterans and families of fallen service members is available year-round.
  • Park and ride services resume with some downtown Houston detours: After providing modified services due to storm damage, METRO is set to resume Park and Ride operations, albeit with downtown route detours.

💼 Business

  • What is the Texas Commission on Environmental Quality, or TCEQ? The TCEQ manages Texas' process for permitting and investigating polluters, and the agency is identified by the state watchdog as a "reluctant regulator."
  • Who's responsible for clearing a tree blown into neighbor's yard? If a neighbor refuses to clear trees affecting your property, your HOA might contact them and encourage the neighbor to address the situation.

Point of View

What's infuriating is that the moguls munching with Trump last week in Houston can't deny the fact that when it comes to climate change, we're all in this together, and that includes future generations.

Under Biden, oil and gas have made record profits on record production, and there's money to be made in the transition to renewables, writes the Chronicle Editorial Board

I hope y'all had a restful Memorial Day. It's hard to believe that Mother's and Memorial Day have passed, leaving us in the full swing of summer holidays. Father's Day is quickly approaching.

Did you know the first Father's Day was celebrated in July 1908, when a church in West Virigina hosted the first-ever event honoring fathers including those who died in a mine accident?

Read more about the origin of the holiday and ways to celebrate in Houston.
