Today's starting lineup

We hope all of you made it through Thursday's storms as safely as possible. We bring you this newsletter through a mix of old and new: candlelight, a WiFi hotspot and some computer battery.

There was some rain inside Minute Maid Park before the Astros went for a sweep against the A's but the teams played on. Houston got a strong start from Cristian Javier and Joey Loperfido's first homer in the majors to take an 8-1 victory, their fifth in a row. The NL Central-leading Brewers come to town next and will likely be a tougher test of the Astros' resurgence.

Before the game, Ronel Blanco explained why he didn't appeal his 10-game suspension for a foreign substance found on his glove during Tuesday's game. He said the rosin he had on his left arm mixed with sweat and had gotten into his glove. A right-hander, Blanco said he didn't know he could not put on rosin on his non-throwing arm.

In Wednesday's NFL schedule release, the Texans were one of the networks' and league's prime-time favorites. A look at why Houston is so popular.

And from the NBA draft combine, Jonathan Feigen takes a look at Ron Holland II, the former Duncanville star, who has no shortage of confidence.

Stat of the day: 63. The number of Houston-area players taking part in the NCAA softball tournament, which starts today.

Not hearing it

Don't tell forward Ron Holland, who opted to play for the G League Ignite over the University of Texas, that any class with him in it is weak.

  • Timberwolves 115, Nuggets 70: Anthony Edwards scored 27 points to pull Minnesota out of its mid-series slump and deliver a flawless victory over defending NBA champion Denver to force a Game 7 in their roller-coaster playoff matchup.
