Meet the new Texans: How the 2024 draft class fits in

Today's starting lineup

Another NFL draft is in the books, and the Texans have nine new players they hope will fill needs and perhaps become even stars.

Jonathan M. Alexander takes a look at each player and how he fits in along with comments from GM Nick Caserio, coach DeMeco Ryans and the players themselves.

The Texas Longhorns had 11 players taken in this year's draft, second only to national champion Michigan, which had 13. Texas A&M had two more players picked — both from the Houston area — in receiver Ainias Smith (Dulles) and lineman Layden Robinson (Manvel). And Houston Christian had its first player taken in the draft: Jalyx Hunt, an edge rusher.

For one day at least, the Astros looked like the team we remembered. They hit, they pitched and they beat the Rockies. Ronel Blanco again showed how important he's been. And it was in Mexico City where they found a festive atmosphere.

And tucked away in a gym in Katy, out of the limelight, Gabby Douglas started her Olympic comeback. A three-time gold medalist, she competed for the first time in eight years, and did well enough to qualify for the U.S. championships in the vault and beam. Danielle Lerner has the story.

Stat of the day: 1.65. Ronel Blanco's ERA in his first 32⅔ innings this season for the Astros.

Texas is back, at least in the draft, with 11 Longhorns selected

Texas trailed only Michigan with the number or players taken in this year's NFL draft.

  • Houston Christian: Jalyx Hunt, picked by Philadelphia in third round, is first Houston Christian player to be selected in NFL draft.
  • Texas A&M: Ainias Smith, a receiver from Dulles, and Layden Robinson, a lineman from Manvel, are A&M's selections on final day.
  • UH: University of Houston edge rusher Nelson Ceaser plans to sign with the Seattle Seahawks as an undrafted free agent.

Ronel Blanco continues his invaluable month

Where the Astros would be at this point without Ronel Blanco is a sobering thought. Houston is 8-19. Blanco has started half of the team's wins.
